Road AS-260

Located in the Principality of Asturias, an autonomous community in north-west Spain, the AS-260 road is said to be one of the most beautiful drives in the country. Through the drive is a viewpoint called the Mirador del Fito, which offers an incredible view of the ocean, valleys and the Picos de Europa in the distance.

AS-260

The road is 21.1 km long and links the towns of Arriondas and Colunga. It’s asphalted with some narrow sections and plenty of turns. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. It is subject to winter snowfalls and the road can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow. Fog, rain and snow are common. It’s very prone to changeable weather conditions with clouds and mists that come and go with very little warning.
The winding, narrow and scenic drive sits within the Sierra del Sueve mountain range. Its highest elevation is Mirador del Fitu, a 360 º viewpoint at 582m above the sea level with stunning views. To the north you will see the coastline of the Cantabrian sea, lined with quiet sandy beaches and rocky coves. To the south you will see the spectacular peaks of the Picos de Europa National Park, including the idiosyncratic summit of Naranjo de Bulnes.

The road is pretty steep.  It is quite dramatic with its hairpin bends and precipitous edges. The slope gets large all the way up to the col with little variation in steepness (8-11%). The road is rather busy with tourists heading for the viewpoint. At the summit there’s a ruined mountain refuge. It has a large parking area, and in the vicinity you can find a shop selling Asturian products and a bar. Mirador del Fito has been used at times in the Vuelta a España and in some rally.
