
Pantà de Cavallers: a steep paved road to the reservoir
Pantà de Cavallers is a high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 1.770m (5,807ft) above the sea level, located in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, Spain.
Located in the Boi valley, within the Aiguestortes i Estany of Saint Maurici National Park, the road to the reservoir, also known as Estanys de Tor, is paved but very narrow, totally impassable for 2 cars at the same time. It shouldn’t be attempted by those who don't know how to reverse. It is called L-500.
Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. It was built in 1958. At the dam there’s a small parking lot. Starting from Caldes de Boí, the ascent is 4.6 km long with 7 hairpin turns. Over this distance the elevation gain is 299 meters. The average gradient is 6,5%, with a 10% of maximum slope.
