The Brutal Climb to Peña Escrita in Granada with 27% Gradients

Peña Escrita is a mountain peak at an elevation of 1,175m (3,854ft) above sea level, located in the province of Granada in the eastern part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. The climb is simply terrible, featuring gradients going up to 27%.

Is the Road to Peña Escrita Paved?

Set high in the southern part of the country, in the Tejeda Mountains, the road to the summit is fully paved (though parts are in bad condition), very narrow, winding, with hairpin turns. The summit once hosted a remote former zoo, and the road is closed most of the year. On the highest point of the road, you can also practice paragliding.

How Long is the Road to Peña Escrita?

The road to the summit is 12.7 km (7.89 miles) long, starting from the paved A-7 road. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,301 m, and the average gradient is 10.24%. Known as the southern Angliru, the road reaches a maximum gradient of 27% through some of the ramps. The final two kilometres are unable to match up to this incredible brutality in terms of gradient.
