The brutal road to Santa Maria de Montgrony
The road to Santuari de Santa Maria de Montgrony is stunning. Located in the municipality of Gombrèn, a village in the province of Girona and autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain, the road is 5,6km long.
The road climbs up to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Montgrony, at an elevation of 1.408m (4,619ft) above the sea level. It’s a very difficult road for people afraid of heights. The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. It’s just 5.6 km, but the driving time is over than 25 minutes. Starting from the junction of GI-402 road, the ascent is 5.6 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 506 meters. The average percentage is 9 %.
