Port d'Aulà

Port d'Aulà, one of the most beautiful roads in the Pyrenees

Port d’Aula is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.260m (7,414ft) above the sea level, located in the Pyrenees, a range of mountains in southwest Europe that forms a natural border between France and Spain. It's one of the highest mountain roads of Spain.

The road to the summit is stunning. It’s called Route Forestiere du Port d’Aula and is gravel. It includes more than 20 hairpins. It’s one of the most beautiful roads in the Pyrenees. The road to the summit was built in the 1970s. It can be closed anytime due the snow. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime and can sometimes block some sections of the road, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice.

There’s a road only on the French side. Starting from Couflens Nord, the ascent is 18 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1.560 meters. The average percentage is 8.7 %. The road still remains an adrenaline-pumping journey and is definitely not for the faint of lungs, heart, or legs. On the road to the summit there are amazing views, specially over the Etang de Prat Matau and Etang d’Areau, two alpine lakes.
