Puerto de Escúllar

Puerto de Escúllar, a scenic road in southern Spain

Puerto de Escúllar is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.040m (6,692ft) above the sea level, located in Sierra de Baza, a mountain range in the Granada Province of southern Spain.

The road to the summit is called AL-5405. It’s paved and includes some steep sections (up to 10.0%). On Puerto de Escúllar (also known as Puerto de Padilla) on either side of the summit, the surface is bad, but nothing to worry about. The only disapointment is the lack of any sign for the top, and it’s actually difficult to know where the highest point is, as it is flat around the top. The road has absolutely no traffic.

There are 2 routes to reach the summit. Starting from Abla, the ascent is 26 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1.242 meters. The average percentage is 4.8 %. And starting from Caniles, the ascent is 30 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1.189 meters. The average percentage is 4 %. This road is usually open all year.
