
Driving the scenic Cares Canyon Road in Asturias
Cañon del Rio Cares is a very scenic canyon located in the province and autonomous community of Asturias, in Spain. It’s one of the most scenic canyon roads of Spain.
Tucked away in the northern part of the country, the road through the gorges carved by the Cares River is totally paved. It’s called AS-264. The drive offers sweeping views of the area.
Located within the Picos de Europa mountain range, the road is 6,1 km (3.79 miles) long, running north-south from Arenas de Cabrales to Poncebos. Construction of the road started on September 4, 1893, and it was opened to traffic on Sunday, October 1, 1916. To drive the road without stopping will take most people between 10 and 12 minutes.
