Congost del Pas Nou, a road to die for
Congost de l'Escala del Pas Nou is the name of a very challenging drive located in the comarca of Noguera, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, in northern Spain. It’s one of the most scenic canyon roads of Spain.
Set high in the Serra del Montsec Protected Natural Area, within the Montsec Mountain Range, in the Pre-Pyrenees, the road through the canyon is paved but very narrow in parts. It’s a road to die for (or die on, if you're not careful!). The road winds as a river, cutting snakes into the cliffs and runs as a single track road along the mountainside for some distance with nowhere to pass another vehicle.
The first bridle path through the gorges was built in the 14th century. The road is called L-913 and was built from 1917-1922. It runs through Congost del Pas Nou, an imposing gorge created by the karst erosion of the waters of the Boix river.
The drive is 7.4 km (4.59 miles) long, running south-north from Vilanova de Meià towards Sant Martí de Barcedana. The road can be blocked by rockslides or snow when the weather is bad. It's normal for your palms to sweat looking at those photos, imagine what it must have been like before the barriers. This road raises everyone’s heartbeat.
