The road to Sobrón Alto is not for the sissies

Sobrón Alto is a small village located in Álava province, in the Basque Country, in northern Spain.

Tucked away between the Montes Obarenes and Sierra de Árcena mountain ranges, the inhumane road to the town is really challenging. It’s called A-4324. It’s totally paved but featuring asphalt and concrete sections. Access to the town is typically open all year round, with the occasional closure in winters due to dangerous weather conditions.

The road is very steep, hitting a 15,4% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting from A-2122 (Sobrón Canyon road), the road to the town is 2.7km (1.67 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 189 meters and the average gradient is 7%.
