Road trip guide: Conquering Pico El Morrón
Pico El Morrón is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 1.593m (5,226ft) above the sea level, located in the westernmost area of the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in southern Spain.
Tucked away in the Sierra de Parapanda, in the Subbética mountain range, the road to the summit is pretty challenging. Starting from the paved GR-3407, the road is mostly unpaved, with paved parts at the beginning of the climb. 4x4 vehicle required to reach the summit.
Nestled in the region of Loja, the summit is crowned with TV antennas towers (known as repetidor TV Parapanda) and a fire guardhouse, with excellent views of a large part of the Andalusian geography. The road can be accessed year round but may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad.
Before reaching the top there is an abandoned quarry where marble and false agate were extracted. The climb is very steep. Starting from GR-3407 road, the ascent is 5.3 km (3.29 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 408 meters. The average gradient is 7.69%, hitting a 16,8% through some of the ramps.
