Pista Hilera de la Cumbre, a track along the Tenerife’s spine
Located on the island of La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands, Pista Hilera de la Cumbre is a short mountain road along the islands’s spine.
Located within the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, the winding scenic road is unpaved. 4x4 vehicle recommended. It’s 6.6 km (4.10 miles) long starting from the paved LP-301 Road. The track is among the most attractive, less well-known routes on the island, with magnificent views. Traffic is scarce. It’s pretty steep in parts.
Surrounded by trees, the road is narrow and steep and parts. It tops out at 1.495 m (4,904ft) above the sea level. The vast volcanic slope is eerily reminiscent of a lunar landscape. Along the way, you drive around a few volcanoes and the black lava landscape provides a dramatic contrast to the lush forest behind. The area is bathed by the trade winds during most of the year.
