The road to Miradoiro do Limo is littered with outstanding sea-landscapes
Miradoiro do Limo is a spectacular viewpoint located at an elevation of 373m (1,223ft) above sea level in A Coruña, Galicia. Perched on the Serra de l'A Capelada, the road leads to one of the most rugged and vertical coastlines in Spain.
How to reach Miradoiro do Limo?
The drive starts from the DP-2205 road, the main artery that runs along the coast between Cariño and Cedeira. The access road is 3.4 km (2.1 miles) long. While the distance is short, the elevation gain is concentrated in several steep sections that require careful driving.
Driving Challenges: Narrow Asphalt and Steep Gradients
The road to the viewpoint is paved but presents several technical challenges for drivers:
- The Incline: The climb features gradients exceeding 10% in several stretches, testing the brakes on the way down.
- Width: It is an extremely narrow road with no central markings. If you encounter another vehicle coming the other way, one may have to reverse to a wider spot.
- Wild Hazards: It is very common to find wild horses (ponis galegos) and cattle roaming freely on the asphalt. Combined with the frequent coastal fog (borraxeira) that can reduce visibility to zero in seconds, this makes the drive a high-concentration task.
Why is it worth the drive?
The viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views of Cariño and the Ría de Ortigueira. To the west, you are just a few kilometers away from the cliffs of Vixía de Herbeira, which at 613 meters are among the highest in continental Europe. The exposure to the Atlantic Ocean means you can feel the full force of the wind at the summit, where the landscape is stark, treeless, and dominated by the sound of the waves below.
