Casetón de Ándara Refuge

Refugio Casetón de Ándara is a high mountain refuge at an elevation of 1.720m (5,643ft) above the sea level, located in the Cantabrian Mountains, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, northern Spain. The route is not for the sissies and shouldn’t be attempted by novice drivers.

Located wthin the Picos de Europa National Park, the road to the hut is unpaved. It’s an old mine road. This is definitely not a Sunday drive. Drive with care as this is a mountain road with dangerous dropoffs. The track features stunning views.

Recommended from late spring to early fall, since you´ll go through mountain roads where there is often snow. 4x4 vehicle required. The road is very steep, with some sections up to 15%. Starting from CA-1 road, the ascent is 3.4 km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 407 meters. The average gradient is 11.97%.
