Driving the scenic EM-508 Road through Serra do Açor
EM-508 is a great driving experience in the heart of Portugal. Located in the Coimbra district, the drive provides stunning views of Serra do Açor.

Is the EM-508 Road paved?
Located in the central part of the country, the road is fully paved, yet not the easiest drive, as it has narrow and curvy parts, stretched along the mountainside with a few drops unprotected by guardrails. Fortunately, it is a lonely road. However, the road can be closed at any time due to landslides, ice, or snow on the ground.
How long is the EM-508 Road?
The road is 40 km (25 miles) long, running north-south from the N-230 Road (near Santa Ovaia) to the M543 Road (near Teixeira).
Is the EM-508 Road worth the drive?
The road is stunning and provides great views. Along the way, it’s possible to admire some ancient villages like Piódão, one of the most beautiful ones in all of Portugal, with its traditional architecture and slate houses. The area is a great touristic attraction because of the renowned Aldeias do Xisto (slate villages).
