The tunnel, known as Gudvangatunnelen or Gudvangentunnelen, is located north of Bergen, in the southwestern part of the country, within the Nærøyfjord World Heritage Park.

When was the Gudvanga Tunnel built?

The tunnel was opened on 17 December 1991 to bypass dangerous and often impassable mountain roads, especially in winter. Before its construction, the only way to access the villages was by water or by driving over the mountains.
