The road is located north of the town of Odda, in the southern part of the country, within the Folgefonna nasjonalpark (Folgefonna National Park).

The road is 12.1 km (7.51 miles) long, running east-west from Eitrheim (a village in Ullensvang municipality on a small peninsula near the southern shore of the Sørfjorden) to Austrepollen (a village in Kvinnherad municipality, at the end of the Maurangsfjorden).

Is County Road 551 (Fv551) paved?

The road is fully paved. Most of the road runs through a tunnel, the Folgefonntunnelen. It’s 11,150 meters (36,580 ft) long and was opened in 2001. The tunnel is closed to pedestrians and bikes.
