Kystriksveien Coastal Road, one of the ’101 World’s most Scenic Routes’

Located in the Nordland coastline of Norway, the Kystriksveien-Road 17 is one of The Best Coastal Drives in the World. The tortuous drive will allow you to experience a beautiful cultural landscape.

The scenic road is 630 kilometres (390 mi) long. Starting from Steinkjer, in Trøndelag county, the journey takes you north, across the Arctic Circle, to Bodø, the largest urban area and town in Nordland county. The drive is definitely worth it. A drive not to be missed! There are many excellent photo opportunities. According to National Geographic, it’s one of the ’101 World’s most Scenic Routes’. Along Kystriksveien there are many islands that you may visit by ferry or boat.  Along the way you’ll need to take six ferry trips, taking from 10 min to an hour each. 

The road encompasses miles of stunning views along the Nordland coastline. Allow yourself to travel slow and explore! Along the road you will encounter many famous landmarks, such as Torghatten, De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters mountain range), Svartisen glacier and Saltstraumen (world’s strongest whirlpools).

The road is lightly trafficked but does get busier at weekends and in the main holiday season. It is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. Gas stations are within easy reach, as are grocery stores. Carved by glaciers throughout the ages, some of these fjords stretch for 200 kilometres inland and are over a kilometre deep. It suffers the harsh meteorological conditions of the area every winter. The journey is an experience of rare and staggering beauty.

It was built by 144.000 prisoners in the 1940’s. The road is a delight to drive, with every kind of twist and turn.
