Starting from the mountain village of Zambla Alta, the route up to the site is 9.4 km (5.8 miles) long. The drive is open to regular cars for the first 7.2 kilometers, following a narrow asphalt lane that winds up the mountain through 14 sharp hairpin turns. This lower section climbs continuously and features steep ramps that touch a 12% gradient.
How challenging is the road to Capanna 2000?
The paved asphalt section is extremely narrow, meaning oncoming vehicles require one driver to pull hard into the mountain wall to pass. Due to the jagged limestone cliffs of Monte Alben, the driving line faces a constant risk of rockfalls and loose debris scattered across the asphalt after heavy storms. A strict weight limit is enforced at the valley base, closing the road entirely to any vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons.
Where does the unpaved track to Capanna 2000 begin?
The tarmac stops dead at the Plassa parking area (at Alpe Arera). The final 2.20 kilometers leading directly to the mountain hut turn into a rugged, unpaved farm track. This final part consists of loose stones, deep ruts, and bare rock layers. Public motorized traffic is strictly banned past the parking lot gate. This final steep gravel incline is reserved exclusively for the 4x4 vehicles of the refuge operators, mountain rescue trucks, and local alpine herders.
Is the road to Capanna 2000 open in winter?
Set near the 2,000-meter mark in the Bergamasque Prealps, the upper mountain sectors face harsh winter weather. The entire route past the lower alpine meadows is completely impassable from late autumn until late May.
