Orrido della Val Taleggio, an Italian balcony road

Orrido della Val Taleggio is a stunning gorge located in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy, in northern Italy. The road is a delight to drive, with every kind of twist and turn.

The road through the gorges is asphalted. It’s called Strada Provinziale 25, and links the villages of San Giovanni Bianco and Sottochiesa. Driving at night, or in poor visibility, is not recommended for drivers unfamiliar with the road. Danger of landslides and ice in winters. The gorge is also known as Orrido dei Serrati or Orrido di San Giovanni Bianco.

The road is very narrow and full of blind turns. It’s a succession of curves and bridges on both sides of the river Enna which over the course of the centuries has gouged out a spectacular 3 km gorge. The road was dug through the rock formations. The road was built between 1902 and 1910 by the Società Gas ed Elettricità di Lecco and the Società Orobia.
