Is the road to Rifugio Pulpito paved?
The road to the summit is entirely unpaved, consisting of gravel, loose rocks, and earth. It is a technical track that requires experience and high-clearance vehicles (or serious mountain biking legs).
- The Route: Starting from the village of Solda, the track is only 3.3 km (2.05 miles) long, but don't let the short distance fool you.
- The Challenge: Over this short distance, you will gain 458 meters of elevation. This results in a staggering average gradient of 13.87%, with several sections being much steeper as the road snakes up the mountain through a series of tight hairpin turns.
- Surface: The trail is narrow and can be "bumpy" due to erosion from melting snow.
Driving Conditions and Access
Due to its high altitude, the road is typically impassable from September to June due to heavy snow and ice. Even in the height of summer, the road can be closed unexpectedly due to adverse weather conditions.
- Note: As it is located within a National Park, always check local regulations regarding motorized access, as permissions can change or be restricted to authorized vehicles only.
