Colle del Mulo

An unpaved military road to Colle del Mulo

Colle del Mulo is a high mountain pass, at an elevation of 1.809m (5,935ft) above the sea level, located in the Hautes Alpes in Piedmont (Italy).

It connects Vallone di Marmora with l'altipiano Meja-Gardetta located in valle Maira. The Gardetta side is reached by a gravel ex-military road, buillt between '30s - '40s. From the Marmora side the road is not complete (it was not finished because of the war in 1943) and the pass is only reachable by a path.

All primitve dirt roads may be rocky with areas or soft gravel or sand that makes travel unsafe for sedans or RVs. Some road sections may require a high clearance 4WD vehicle, in four-wheel-drive, driven by a driver experienced in 4WD drive techniques to drive the road without getting stuck.
The unpaved sections of the road can be impassable when wet. In any case, driving 4WD is recommended due to uneven surface. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and can easily get muddy if it rains making it challenging to get through.
