The pass is located about 110 kilometres (68 mi) north of Venice and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Belluno, in the northern part of the country, within the mid-Boite valley.

The summit is crowned with a mountain hut called Rifugio Giampietro Talamini. The shelter was rebuilt some years ago.

Set high between the two Dolomites massifs of Antelao and Pelmo, the road to the summit, also known as Forcella Ciandolada, is mostly paved with some good parts of gravel. It has very narrow parts and steep sections.
