Driving the scenic Strada del Lumiei, the Italian road of the tunnels

Strada del Lumiei is the name of a very challenging road with stunning views located in the Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Strada del Lumiei

Tucked away on the northern part of the country, near the Austrian border, the road (officially known as Strada Provinciale 73) is totally paved. Construction of the road started in 1919 and was opened to public in 1934. In 2021 the road was fully repaved.

SP73 is 19.5km (12.11 miles) long running from Ampezzo to the Beneto border. The road is pretty challenging, running through countless tunnels (some of them narrow and unlit) and with 25 hairpin turns. High risk of rock slides. It’s impasable to higher vehicles.

Located within the Carnia mountain area of the Apennines mountain range, to drive the road without stopping will take most people between 35 and 45 minutes. The drive offers stunning views of Lago di Sàuris and Lumiei Gorge.
