Road F575 (Eysteinsdalsleið): Experienced Drivers with Advanced Off Road Skills Only
Located on the eastern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, in the Western Region, on the western coast of Iceland, the defiant F575 (Eysteinsdalsleið) is a very difficult drive through some of Iceland's most epic landscapes. 4x4 vehicles only. The GSM signal is rather unreliable.
How long is Road F575 (Eysteinsdalsleið)?
Tucked away in the Snæfellsjökull National Park, the road is totally unpaved. It’s one of the famous F Roads of the country. It’s 12km (7.45 miles) long, running west-east from the paved Útnesvegur towards F-570. You can locate the road on this map. F575’s conditions as noted below require care and caution. This serves as a warning for less-experienced drivers who want to take the said road or any F-road for that matter. When driving on mountain paths, check the road conditions and their passability. Is Road F575 (Eysteinsdalsleið) dangerous?
The road is extremely rough in spots. Should not be drive in anything else than a full size 4x4 with high clearance. Expect large potholes, many ruts and large boulders on their surface. Driving in a small passenger car is simply and plainly irresponsible and can be very dangerous. The road is heavily potholed and your vehicle will bounce, labour and shake. The road is not for the faint of heart and absolutely not for those without real four wheel drive and the know how to drive on challenging roads. The drive combines strong stony slopes, broken sections, big rocks and muskeg.
Is Road F575 (Eysteinsdalsleið) open?
The road is only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Expect to be alone, this track is not very busy even and very remote. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts.
