Driving the scenic Road F959 (Viðfjarðarvegur)

Located in Viðfjörður, a fjord stretching south from the Norðfjörður bay in the Eastern Region of Iceland the F959 (Viðfjarðarvegur) is a very challenging drive. Strange incidents were reported to happen on the area.

Road F959 (Viðfjarðarvegur)

The road is only for 4x4 vehicles with significant fording capacity. No service or network. It’s 8.1 km long running from Road 954 towards Viðfjörður, a lone uninhabited farmhouse abandoned since 1955. The farm was said to have been haunted for centuries. Should not be drive in anything else than a full size 4x4 with high clearance. Expect large potholes, many ruts and large boulders on their surface. Driving in a small passenger car is simply and plainly irresponsible and can be very dangerous. It’s one of the famous F Roads of the country.
The road is only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Expect to be alone, this track is not very busy even and very remote. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts. The road crosses incredible landscapes.
