Road F586 (Haukadalsskarðsvegur)

The road is 34.5 km long with some narrow and steep parts. It’s a hidden gem of Icelandic off-road driving. It is a rough and challenging road. Expect large potholes, many ruts and large boulders on their surface. Driving in a small passenger car is simply and plainly irresponsible and can be very dangerous. The road begins at road 60 and becomes F586 as it climbs out of the valley and over the Haukadalsskarð pass and down to road 1 in Hrutafjordur. To get into road F586 from the Ring Road, you need to cross a gate.

The road is heavily potholed and your vehicle will bounce, labour and shake. The journey gives way to some of Iceland's most epic landscapes. It’s one of the famous F Roads of the country. It’s only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Along the way you get to cross a narrow river several times. Might encounter some small creeks or puddles, usually no more than an ankle deep.

Expect to be alone, this track running next to a river is not very busy even and very remote. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts. The road crosses incredible landscapes.
