How to conquer the challenging Road F229?
Situated in the Southern Region of Iceland, the F229 (Jökulheimaleið) is a difficult drive with breathtaking landscapes and rugged terrain with rivers. It’s for 4x4 vehicles with significant fording capacity only. No service or network. It’s one of the famous F Roads of the country.
Is Road F229 unpaved?
The road is totally unpaved with potholes and boulders. It is a rough and challenging road over endless black sands and lava dunes. It should not be driven in anything other than a full-size 4x4 with high clearance.
Where does Road F229 start and end?
The road runs from F228 Road (s/e of Þórisvatn) towards Jökulheimar glaciological hut, in the lower part of the Tungná River, at the very edge of the Tungnarjokull glacier.
Is Road F229 worth the drive?
Located in the Southern Highlands of Iceland, within the Vatnajökull National Park, the road is surrounded by a lunar landscape. The drive gives way to some of Iceland's most epic scenery. The area around the road is a barren wasteland, surrounded by various craters, pillow lava, and glacier-carved tuff cliffs, crossing incredible landscapes.
Is Road F229 open in winter?
It’s only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September.
How remote is Road F229?
Be prepared for a highly remote and solitary experience. This track is not busy, and in the event of a vehicle breakdown, passing traffic or local inhabitants will be extremely rare. Furthermore, be aware that cell phone service is unavailable in many parts of the area.
Are there rivers crossing on Road F229?
The road crosses the Tungna River, one of Iceland‘s most voluminous glacier rivers. Due to its power, only those experienced in jeep driving and river crossings should attempt this. Crossing big rivers in the area requires experience and caution. Never attempt to cross alone or during heavy rain, as the water level can rise quickly and become treacherous. Only well-equipped 4x4 vehicles or larger jeeps should attempt a crossing. Before entering the water, always check the river depth to ensure it's not too deep.
While this area is amazing to explore by day, be aware that driving here can be significantly more dangerous after dark. Crucially, check your insurance coverage: standard rental car insurance typically does not cover water damage, including any damage caused by driving through rivers.
