Driving the scenic Road 870 (Norðausturvegur)

Road 870 (Norðausturvegur) is a very scenic journey in the Northeastern Region of Iceland, along Iceland's Arctic Coast Way.

Located in Iceland's most isolated region, the road is unpaved and can sometimes be a little rough so just take your time. The road links the villages of Kópasker, on the eastern shore of Öxarfjörður in northeast Iceland and Raufarhöfn, on the northeastern tip of the Melrakkaslétta peninsula. The little-used coastal road is gravel but suitable for normal cars as long as you drive carefully.

Extreme care with fog. It can be very thick. The road is usually impassable from early September to late June. Expect to be alone, this track is not very busy. It is not recommended to drive unaccompanied. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts. The drive offers breathtaking landscapes. You will be far away from everything up there, one of the more desolate areas in Iceland.
