Is Road F224 unpaved?

This road is strictly for high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles due to its completely unpaved nature and demanding terrain. The track is in poor condition, characterized by large, immovable rocks rather than a rolling surface. Drivers should anticipate deep potholes, extensive ruts, and numerous large boulders. Attempting it in a regular car is strongly discouraged as it poses a serious safety risk.

How long is Road F224?

The road is 2.4 km (1.49 miles) long, running from F208 road at Sólvangur towards a parking lot at Landmannalaugar. At the end, there’s a parking lot to access the hut and a natural hot spring with a temperature of around 37-39°C. During the tourist high season, there is also a small shop there that sells coffee and basic groceries. The drive offers breathtaking landscapes.

Is Road F224 open in winter?

Located in the Highlands of Iceland, the road is only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September.

Are there rivers to cross on Road F224?

This route involves navigating a double fjord, and crossing the significant rivers requires a degree of expertise. It is strongly advised against attempting these crossings with a single vehicle or during periods of heavy rainfall. Rising water levels due to substantial rain and warmer temperatures can make the fords treacherous. Only properly equipped jeeps and larger vehicles are capable of safely traversing these rivers. Smaller jeeps are particularly unsuitable for these crossings. Should you become stranded in the river, contact emergency services at 112. Always assess the river's depth before attempting to cross, as water levels can change rapidly with rain or temperature fluctuations. While the road is stunning during daylight, it can be hazardous at night. Be aware that rental car insurance typically does not cover water damage, including any incurred while crossing rivers.
