Driving the F946, one of the most deserted roads of Iceland

F946 (Loðmundarfjarðarvegur) is the name of a very scenic drive located on the east fjords of Iceland. The drive offers breathtaking mountain landscapes. It's only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Along the way you’ll be truly in a natural wonderland of landscape and geology.

How long is F946?

Situated on the coast of the Borgarfjörður Eystri, the road is 37.5km (23.30 miles) long. It runs from Borgarfjörður Eystri (Road 94) to Klyppsstadhir, a mountain hut that includes up to 38 sleeping bag spaces. It’s one of the famous F Roads of the country.

Is Road F946 unpaved?

The road is totally unpaved with extreme heights in some locations. It is a rough and challenging road only for a 4 wheel drive vehicle with high clearance. The track is pretty bad with a lot of big rocks. Driving in a small passenger car is simply and plainly irresponsible and can be very dangerous. The challenging steep downslopes along the way can make it dangerous ride for offroad-beginners.  You can expect some serious hills but the beautiful scenery makes it all worth it

Is Road F946 open?

The road tops out at 472m (1,548ft) above the sea level. It’s only open the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Outside of the summer, the road is not maintained and is for all intents and purposes, impassible. It is not recommended to drive unaccompanied. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts.

How long does it take to drive the F946 road?

Surrounded by lunar landscapes, to drive the road without stopping will take most people between 2 and 3 hours. It’s an incredibly scenic drive with incredible geologic formations to look out for. The road does not connect to another road, so be prepared to take the same route back and account for the 2-hour drive back when you head out.
