Surrounded by an atmosphere at the end of the world, the road straddles Þingeyjarsveit and Eyjafjarðarsveit municipalities, in the north-central part of the island.

Is Road F881 unpaved?

The road is totally unpaved. It’s a tough and demanding track, suitable only for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. You'll encounter deep potholes, uneven terrain, and scattered rocks along the way. The route is isolated and rarely traveled, so don’t expect much company. While it offers stunning views in daylight, driving it at night can be risky.

How long is Road F881?

The road is 18.2 km (11.30 miles) long, running east-west from F26 Road towards F821 Road. If your vehicle breaks down, help may be hard to come by—there’s almost no traffic, no nearby settlements, and cell phone coverage is unreliable in some areas. The area is extremely remote, so you need to be well prepared.

Is Road F881 open in winter?

It’s one of the highest roads in the country, climbing up to 941m (3,087ft) above sea level. It’s only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September.
