Road trip guide: Conquering Námaskarð Pass

Námaskarð is a mountain pass at an elevation of 409m (1,341ft) above the sea level, located in the north of Iceland. The area is otherworldly, a sulfuric martian landscape.

Námaskarð

The road to the summit is asphalted. It’s called Route 1 (Ring road), which encircles the country. Its many twists, turns and narrows can pose a challenge to even the most experienced drivers. Driving at night, or in poor visibility, is not recommended for drivers unfamiliar with the road. While exploring Námaskarð, be sure not to touch any of the running water, as it is likely to be boiling.
