The steep unpaved road to Mount Ithome
Mount Ithome is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 800m (2,600ft) above the sea level, located in Messenia, Greece.
The zig-zag ancient dirt road to the summit is gravel and very steep. 4x4 recommended. Starting at Kalamata-Pylos road, the ascent is 3.5 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 327 meters and the average percentage is 9.34%. The drive is definitely worth it. A drive not to be missed!
There are many excellent photo opportunities. Don't forget your camera with lots of film/memory, fully charged batteries and an empty memory card! At the summit there’s a church called Ekklisia Panagia. From the top the whole valley of the Pamisos river can be viewed eastward to Mount Taygetus and southward to the Gulf of Messenia.
