Livaniana Road, a hairy coastal drive
Livaniana road is a hairy road located on the south coast of Crete, Greece. The road is 9.3km long and features 16 hairpin turns.
This extremely narrow dangerous road is located near the gorge of Aradhena where a road branches off down to Livaniana. The road starts and ends asphalted, but about three kilometres have no surface on them apart from mountain stone.... and the drops are high and there is no trace of a barrier anywhere.
The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. Still if you go over the edge there plenty of vultures anxious to find pickings!
