the world's most spectacular roads

Hora Sfakion-Anopolis Road

Spectacular serpentine road located on the south coast of Crete, in Greece, with a length of 11.9km, between the town of Hora Sfakion and the plateau of Anopolis.

The road is a collection of hairpins: there are 19. The road starts in Hóra Sfakíon or Sfakia, a town on the south coast of Crete, capital of the remote and mountainous region of Sfakiá and ends in Anopolis, a small village, built on a small but fertile plateau, at an elevation of 600 m above the sea level, located in the southern areas of the White Mountains. The road, with never ending hairpins, has breath taking views, with huge precipices and deep gullies. The surface is asphalted. The zone offers quiet beaches with crystal clear sea water, good food and wine, and its marvellous opportunities to walk along the coast.

The road is pretty steep. Starting at Chora Sfakion, at the sea level, the road is 11.9 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 586 meters. The average percentage is 4.9%. The maximum slope is 10%. This is the southernmost part of Europe, still the wildest and most natural part of Crete. The mountainous landscape is of outstanding wild beauty. This winding road climbs the bare mountains, offering extensive views out to Gavdos. Landslides can occur anytime and can sometimes block some sections of the road.
