A memorable road trip to Königshaus am Schachen
Königshaus am Schachen is a small castle at an elevation of 1.863m (6,112ft) above the sea level, built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, in Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
The road to the summit, located in the Bavarian Alps, is totally unpaved and closed to particular motor vehicles but driveable with a 4x4 vehicle. It’s usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). The castle was constructed between 1869 and 1872. Adjacent to the house itself are the Alpengarten auf dem Schachen, an alpine botanical garden and the Schachenhaus mountain refuge, which originally served as a supply house for the royal family.
