A Steep Unpaved Road to the Gotzenalm Refuge in the Gotzen Mountains

Gotzenalm is a high mountain refuge at an elevation of 1,687m (5,534ft) above sea level, located in the district of Berchtesgadener Land in the German state of Bavaria. It's one of the highest roads in the country.

Where is the Gotzenalm Refuge?

The refuge is located within the Berchtesgaden National Park, in the southeastern part of the country, near the Austrian border.

Is the Gotzenalm Refuge Worth It?

Situated on a high alpine pasture above Lake Königssee, the refuge rewards its guests with a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding Alpine world. A special highlight is the view of Lake Königssee, located 1,100 meters below, with its famous pilgrimage church St. Bartholomä and the steeply rising Watzmann East Face.

Is the Road to Gotzenalm Refuge Unpaved?

Set high in the Gotzen Mountains, the road to the refuge is totally unpaved. It comprises some narrow sections and very steep parts. A high-clearance vehicle is required. The road is usually closed to private vehicles.
