Fort de la Turra

A wild road to Fort de la Turra

The Ancien Fort de La Turra is an abandoned high mountain fort at an elevation of 2.493m (8,179ft) above the sea level, located in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.

The narrow and challenging road to the fort, also known as Forte Turra, is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicles only. It’s an old military road. Accessibility to the fort is largely limited to the summer season. At the summit are several military constructions from 1898. It saw action in June 1940 during the Italian invasion.

The road to the summit is very steep. Starting from the paved D106 Road, the ascent is 7.2 km (4.47 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 479 meters. The average gradient is 6.65%.
