
The paved D89, a road to Puigmal
D89 is a very scenic paved mountain road located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France, near the Spanish border, on the way to Puigmal (also called Puigmal d'Err).
Located in the Pyrenees mountain range, the winding road, also known as Route du Puigmal, is totally paved and ends at 2.241m (7,352ft) above the sea level. The road is very narrow in some sections. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad.
Be prepared for the cold and wind. The road is pretty steep. Starting from the town of Sainte-Léocadie, the ascent is 16.7 km long via several hairpin turns. Over this distance the elevation gain is 929. The average gradient is 5.56%.
