A Treacherous Balcony Road Through Defile de Joucou in Occitania

Défilé de Joucou is a very narrow canyon carved by the Le Rebenty river, located in the department of Aude, in France, where even a road barely fits. Pictures don't do it justice; it's one of the famous French balcony roads.

The canyon, also known as Défilé d'Able, is located in the Occitania region, in the southern part of the country, within the valley of the Rebenty.

Is the Road Through Défilé de Joucou Paved?

The road through the canyon is totally paved, yet very narrow. It's called D107. The road runs through a few unlit tunnels.

How Challenging is the Road Through Défilé de Joucou?

The drive is very lovely but can also be very challenging if you are driving. Along the way, you'll have to face many sections too narrow for cars to pass and a strong chance you will need to reverse around a blind corner on a narrow road. At some places, the road is cut out of the rock, leaving the overhanging rock as a kind of roof. Walking and cycling are recommended because the roads will require much of your attention, and you will see less of the scenery from the car window. Height limit is 3.5 meters.

The most treacherous, narrowest, and deepest part of the drive is a short 4.7 km (2.92 miles) long section, running west-east from the town of Joucou to Belfort-sur-Rebenty.
