Villacher Alpenstraße

The Villach Alpine Road is a very scenic journey located in the Austrian province of Carinthia, near the Italian and Slovenian borders. It has seven bends and 116 turns with a maximum slope gradient of 10%. It’s one of the scenic Austrian Alpine roads.

This spectacular alpine road up to the Dobratsch is 16.5 km long, located just below the region’s highest peak, the famous Dobratsch. The road is pretty steep, with a maximum slope gradient of 10%, with an elevation gain of 1.200 metres, finishing at 1.732 m above the sea level. Due to the high elevations and exposure, the road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Be prepared for the cold and wind! It’s open all year round.

The toll road was built in 1965 and links the city of Villach-Möltschach and the Rosstratte View Point. Its many twists, turns and narrows can pose a challenge to even the most experienced drivers. The wide route leading through an area of great geographical interest is not easy, though. Up, down, right, left all the time. It has seven bends and 116 turns.
The journey offers an exhilarating driving experience, the most spectacular views and unique experiences. It’s an incredible journey, an unforgettable experience. The drive offers a great view to Carinthia’s beautiful landscape. There are lots of viewpoints, official and unofficial. The road is a delight to drive, with every kind of twist and turn. It offers fantastic views of the city of Villach, the Julian Alps and the Dobratsch, in the eastern Alps.
