Großsee

The road to Großsee is a chillout in the high mountains of Austria

Großsee is a high mountain reservoir at an elevation of 2.481m (8,139ft) above the sea level, located in the district of Spittal an der Drau in the Austrian state of Carinthia.

Set high in the Austrian Alps, the narrow and winding road to the summit is mostly paved. The asphalt ends at 2.470m, and the last stretch is impassable due to big stones/boulders and usually snow.

The road was built in 1978 and has 30 hairpin turns. The road to the reservoir is very steep, hitting a 24% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at Großkirchheim, the ascent is 15.8 km (9.81 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 1.459 meters. The average gradient is 9.23%.
