
Goldeck: enjoy a drive among the clouds in Austria
Goldeck is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.110m (6,922ft) above the sea level, located in Carinthia, Austria.
Tucked away in the southern part of Austria, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicles only. The road is closed to private vehicles. It has 4 hairpin turns. The road to the summit is very steep, hitting an 11% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at the paved Goldeck Panorama Road, the ascent is 2.3 km (1.42 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 180 meters. The average gradient is 7.82%.
Set high in the eastern Alps, this road is usually impassable from late October through late June or early July (depending on snow). The summit hosts a ski lift (Gipfelbahn Goldeck) and a big communication tower.
