Pasul Gutâi, an awe-inspiring hairpinned drive

Pasul Gutâi is a mountain pass at an elevation of 993m (3,257ft) above the sea level, located in the Maramureș County, northern Romania. The drive offers spectacular views over endless forest.

The road to the summit, also known as Gutin Pass, Paltinu Pass, Paltinului Pass or Pintea Pass is totally paved but very hairpinned on its southern slope. It’s called DN 18 road.

The pass is 28.5 km (17.7 miles) long and runs from Baia Sprie towards Mara travelling through the "Russian mountains". Drive at moderate speed. You’re not on a race and the road is very curvy.

Nestled in the Eastern Carpathians, the drive is very scenic running through the beautiful natural scenery of Maramures. In 2015 a wooden crucifix was erected near the summit. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey, especially in winters.
