A memorable road trip to Karaula Zastan
Karaula Zastan is a former military barrack at an elevation of 1.347m (4,419ft) above the sea level located in eastern Montenegro in the upper Lim valley.
Set high in the Prokletije Mountains, the road to the former barrack, also known as Zaston Koliba, is totally unpaved. It’s an old military road. 4x4 vehicles only. The last meters are not passable by a vehicle. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: adverse conditions are common.
The military barrack is located near the start of the trail to Maja Jezercë, a mountain peak at an elevation of 2.694 m. The drive is pretty steep, hitting an 18.9% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting from Vusanje, the ascent is 6.5 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 337 meters. The average percentage is 5.18 %.
