Located in the Morača region of Montenegro, the Moraca river canyon is said to be one of most beautiful river canyons of the country.
Tucked away on the south-eastern part of the central region of Montenegro, the road along the Moraca River Canyon is one of the most spectacular roads in the world. It’s called European Route E65. The road is totally paved. Riddled with countless cliff-side bends and tunnels, this road is basically out to get you, but if you survive you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the landscape that surrounds you.
The road is 68.6 km (42.62 miles) long, running from Kolašin (the centre of Kolašin Municipality) to Podgorica (the capital city of Montenegro). The highway is built along the edge of the narrow canyon through many tunnels. This road is passable during most part of the year. It is closed only in case of abundant snowing or great rockslides. Near the end, the road gets progressively more precarious as it follows the river into a nearly perpendicular canyon, 300m to 400m deep.
To drive the road without stopping will take most people between 1.5 and 2 hours. The drive offers stunning views of the area. Carved by the Moraca river, the canyon separates the Moračke planine range and the Sinjajevina range. Along the way you can enjoy observing the beautiful contrast between steep, dark cliffs and light, green river, while round, white peaks of Bjelasica glow in the distance, at moments, this beauty becomes scary. The landscape along the highway is particularly picturesque.
