Ibarska Magistrala, a dangerous road to Serbia

State Road 22 (Ibarska Magistrala) is a paved road connecting Belgrade with western Serbia and Montenegro. Often called the "black highway, bad conditions and overcrowding can make it dangerous.

The standard of the road ranges from fair to poor with conditions worsening in rural areas, especially in and after bad weather. The road, known as Ibar Highway, is 297 km (185 miles) long, running from Belgrade to Montenegro at Špiljani border.

Ideal time to travel is daylight. Not adviced night drive. Mostly a single-lane, the road carries heavy traffic. In the southern section, highway runs parallel to the river Ibar, hence the name. The road is a part of European routes: E65, E80 and E763. The drive averages several hundreds traffic accidents annually.
