The Ultimate Guide to Kajmakčalan

Mount Voras-Kajmakčalan is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.524m (8,281ft) above sea level, located on the border of Greece and the Republic of North Macedonia. It's one of the highest roads in the country.

What’s at the summit of Mount Voras-Kajmakčalan?

At the summit there are two small churches. On the Macedonian side, there is a church dedicated to the Serbian soldiers who died in September 1916, in the Battle of Kajmakčalan between Serbian and Bulgarian troops. In the chapel, there is an urn containing the heart of Archibald Reiss, a famous Swiss forensic scientist. On the Greek side, there’s one named Profitis Ilias.

Is the road to Mount Voras-Kajmakčalan unpaved?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is required. The road to the summit runs from Petalino (in North Macedonia) to the ski resort Voras –Kaimaktsalan (in Central Macedonia, Greece). It’s about 20km long.

Is the road to Mount Voras-Kajmakčalan open in winter?

Set high in a mountain range known as Voras Mountains (Nidže), accessibility is largely limited to the summer season.
