The Ultimate Guide to Kajmakčalan
Mount Voras-Kajmakčalan is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.524m (8,281ft) above the sea level, located on the border of Greece and the Republic of North Macedonia. It's one of the highest roads of the country.
The road to the summit is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicle with high clearance required. At the summit are 2 small churches. On the Macedonian side one for the Serbian soldiers who died in September 1916, in the Battle of Kajmakčalan between Serbian and Bulgarian troops and in the Greek side is named Profitis Ilias.
Tucked away in a mountain range known as Voras Mountains (Nidže) accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. The road to the summit runs from Petalino (in North Macedonia) to the ski resort Voras –Kaimaktsalan (in Central Macedonia, Greece). The wind is usually quite strong. High winds blow here all year long.
