the world's most spectacular roads

Mount Voras – Kajmakčalan is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.524m (8,281ft) above the sea level, located on the border between Greece and the southern Republic of Macedonia. It's one of the highest roads of the country.

The road to the summit is gravel. Do not travel this pass in severe weather conditions. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. At the summit there are 2 small churches. On the Macedonian side one for the Serbian soldiers who died in September 1916, in the Battle of Kajmakčalan between Serbian and Bulgarian troops and in the Greek side is named Profitis Ilias.

The road is very steep. The wind is usually quite strong at mountain areas. High winds blow here all year long. Even in summer you can confront with snowy days. Temperatures here in the winter are brutally cold. With such a high summit altitude the road can be closed anytime due to snowfalls. The zone is prone to heavy mist and can be dangerous in low visibility conditions.
