Restelicë-Volkovija border

A gravel road to the Restelicë-Volkovija border

The Restelicë-Volkovija border is an international high mountain border at an elevation of 1.628m (5,341ft) above the sea level located in the Kosovo-Macedonia border.

The road over the pass is gravel. It’s extremely bumpy and a 4x4 is necessary in bad weather. After rain, even a single rainfall, conditions of the road can be challenging. Adverse weather conditions can prompt closure of the road. The road has loose stones and some sections are very narrow. The border is located in the Šar Mountains, a mountain range in the Balkans that extends from Kosovo and the northwest of the Republic of Macedonia, to northeastern Albania.
The road over the border links Restelicë, a small town in Kosovo in the district of Prizren/Prizren. In Kosovo, the road is called R113. It’s 36,7km long before reaching Volkovija, a mountain village in the Republic of Macedonia, part of the Municipality of Brvenica.Due its unique location and the climb in elevation over thousands of feet, and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared.  Heavily armed police officers are patrolling this border always. This road can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow.
