Suur Munamägi is the highest road of Estonia
Suur Munamägi ("Big Egg Mountain") is a mountain peak at an elevation of 318m (1,043ft) above the sea level, located in Võru County in Estonia.
Is the road to Suur Munamägi paved?
Located near the village of Haanja, on the south-eastern corner of the country, the road to the summit is the highest road of Estonia (and the Baltic states). It’s paved and pretty narrow. The last 450 meters are closed to private vehicles. The usage of the road is allowed only with a special permit.
Is Suur Munamägi worth it?
The summit hosts a 29.1 metres (95 ft) high observation tower. The views from the top are amazing. A must visit. It provides a splendid 50 km range view of the Estonian nature and the surrounding region of Vormaa. The current tower, the sixth in line, was constructed in 1939, and reconstructed in 1969. There’s a pleasant indoor-outdoor cafe on the ground floor, and another selling burgers and fudge back on the main road. The height of Suur Munamägi makes it one of the most important national symbols of the country.
